Jon Ward Named to Challenger Athletics’ Board of Directors

Jon Ward has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Challenger Athletics, Inc. ("Challenger"), a not-for-profit corporation that was established to, among other things, promote, foster and encourage children with special needs to participate in the sport of lacrosse. The organization holds lacrosse practices and games for special-needs children in Bay Shore, New York. The program, now in its second season, has over 70 athletes from all over Long Island participating in lacrosse practices and games.

Since 2010, Joseph R. Bjarnson has devoted countless hours representing Indian guest workers who claim that they are victims of discrimination and human labor trafficking. Mr. Bjarnson has joined attorneys from the Southern Poverty Law Center, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund, Crowell & Moring LLP and the Louisiana Justice Institute in representing the Plaintiffs in the related cases of David, et. al v. Signal International, LLC, et. al., No. 08-cv-01220-SM-DEK (E.D. La.) and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission v. Signal International LLC, No. 12-cv-00557 (E.D. La.).

Court Overturns Zoning Board’s Five-Year Limit on Laundromat’s Special Use Permit

Christian Browne, a Partner with the Firm, successfully represented a commercial property owner in an Article 78 proceeding in New York State Supreme Court against the Town of Hempstead’s Zoning Board of Appeals. The court overturned the Board’s decision to impose a five-year durational time limit on a special use permit for a Uniondale laundromat.

The story was reported in Newsday and the Long Island Business News.

Michael Sahn Represents AVR Realty and Life's Worc in Obtaining Land Use and Zoning Approvals for New Projects

Michael Sahn, the Firm's Managing Partner, recently represented AVR Realty in obtaining land use and zoning approvals to construct a new, 120-room Marriott Spring Hill Suites hotel in Carle Place. He also represented Life's WORC, a non-profit organization, to obtain land use approvals for its expansion in Garden City.

Daniel Braff, a Partner in the firm, continues to develop the firm's New York City land use practice. He was recently retained by a prominent Manhattan-based parking garage owner/operator to secure approval from the Department of City Planning to authorize the continued operation of an indoor parking garage in midtown Manhattan.

The New York State Estate Tax Exemption has been increased this year from $1,000,000.00 per person to $2,062,500.00 per person.

John P. Christopher Named Secretary of New York State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section

John P. Christopher, an Associate with the Firm, was appointed Secretary of the Young Lawyers Section (YLS) of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). As Secretary, Mr. Christopher serves as one of the four Officers of the Section. In addition, Mr. Christopher serves on the Executive Committee of the YLS, holding the positions of Tenth District Co-Representative, Chair of the Nominating Committee, YLS Delegate to the NYSBA House and Liaison to the Real Property Law Section.

Elaine Colavito Sworn in as Treasurer of Nassau County Women’s Bar Association

Elaine Colavito, an Associate with the Firm, was sworn in for a second term as Treasurer of the Nassau County Women’s Bar Association (NCWBA) on June 12. Each term runs for one year. Associate Justice Peter Skelos of the Appellate Division, Supreme Court, Second Judicial Department, swore in Ms. Colavito in a special ceremony.

Adam H. Koblenz (pictured, front row, sixth from left), a Partner with Sahn Ward Coschignano & Baker, PLLC, was Tennis Co-Chair for the Children’s Medical Fund of New York’s 39th Annual Golf and Tennis Charity Classic, which was recently held at the Glen Oaks Club. He currently serves as one of the Vice Presidents of the Men’s Division.

On July 14th, Sahn Ward Coschignano & Baker co-sponsored the Town of Oyster Bay's Music Under the Stars Concert, featuring Bret Michaels. The concert was held at the John J. Burns Park in Massapequa and was attended by thousands of local residents.
